WIA, since I first joined it, has been for me one of the most interesting of the Border War sites. There is a variety of different interests. It includes everyone, right down to the chefs. There is even a place for former cry-baby sissies and mommy’s boys like myself. Best of all, it is generally a site where one can find some serious information and considered opinions. And an on-line bookshop with some really interesting titles. One of its best features is its newsletters, which for the minimal cost of a download, one can obtain merely by registering. They are beautifully laid out and have a variety of interesting articles; everything from the history of the war to accounts of the battles to information on military hardware. They are in full colour, and I freely confess that I look forward to each edition. It is always an interesting read. If you remember the old Encyclopaedias that one bought and built up week by week, like Purnell’s Encyclopaedia of the Second World War, you will have an idea of the feel of the thing. Johan Schoeman is now well into the third volume of these newsletters. But as he himself says, if you want hard copy, it becomes expensive to print them out. For this reason, he has started to bind and publish them. Volume 1 is available. I have purchased my copy already, and it has become most entertaining and informative bed-time reading. In good-quality hardback and high resolution printing on quality paper, it is well worth obtaining and keeping, especially of “you were there.” It suffers the one handicap of most limited editions; that of cost. At about R700,00 it sounds very expensive. But it would probably cost two or three times that if you were to print the newsletters one-by-one on your Deskjet – and then you would still lack the hard-cover binding, the indices and the illustrations that have replaced the events pages. There are two compelling reasons for buying it. Firstly, because like the Grensoorlog DVDs, it is worth having. Secondly, because if our Veterans’ websites are to survive and flourish, we have got to help to sustain them – and this means digging, sometimes deeper than we might wish, into our back pockets. WIA is an excellent website – the best, I’d say – and very much worth supporting. Join the site, buy the book, and help it to continue being a quality voice of SADF Veterans. We’ll only have ourselves to blame if we don’t.

Hi , stumbled onto this site , was an engineer there , remember the 5,5 going in the drink and the efforts to retrieve it , some pissed off gunners and a section of amused engineers . We used that pont to take op guys behind the lines , remember Dec 25 vividly , two engineers sitting on the mud guards of an eland 60 mil spooking that very scary road , Don and i were the first to do this route and had to put our hands over the drivers view port if we spotted anything unusual on the track , yeh right , not a cool way to mine sweep , wow something like 37 yrs ago , long time .
Thanks Johan I would appreciate that. Regards. Andrew

I remember that day well. I was in 4SAI - 12Bravo. Hennie Strauss was the Section leader in 22C. He used to sleep in the bed opposite me in 2nd phase - Charlie Comp Platoon 2. He was from Bloemfontein and a good guy. The next day in the 4SAI laager, I saw Hennie, pulling all the personal effects out of that Ratel.  I still have a hard time believing it was one of our 90's that shot out 22C. That same day one of our Olifant tanks got hit right in front of Pl 2 in thick bush. It was later ascertained a Ratel 90 shot it out. The round hit the 81mm smoke generator and gave me a moerste fright. The crew bailed out of the tank. No serious injuries. So I guess, what I am saying, its not impossible 22C was hit by friendly fire. The bush was thick and visibility was close to zero at times. Throw in the fucken artillery landing heavy, and trying to navigate, hatches closed. Hectic! Many many years later, still haven't 100% come to terms with everything. Philip, East London - 1/2 of  you mortorists were, and my GV china, Fires van Vuuren. Be well all. Cheers Mark Barwood

Haha, sorry for that miss-wording, it shouls not be "suspected", it should be "expected". Spellchecks should first ask your homelanguage and then know that all words must be dealt with "suspicion".
